Development of a flow system for studying biofilm formation on medical devices with microcalorimetry.
Isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC) is particularly suited to the study of microbiological samples in complex or heterogeneous environments because it does not require optical clarity of the sample and can detect metabolic activity from as few as 10(4) CFU/mL cells. While the use of IMC for studying planktonic cultures is well established, in the clinical environment bacteria are most likely to b...
متن کاملThe role of biofilms in reprocessing medical devices.
Biofilms are communities of microorganisms within extracellular polymeric material attached to surfaces. Within a biofilm, cells have some protection from drying and other stress factors in their environment, including antimicrobial agents. In this article, the challenges to medical device reprocessing posed by biofilms are addressed. Biofilm formation on reusable medical device surfaces is a r...
متن کاملAdvances in Microbial Biofilm Prevention on Indwelling Medical Devices with Emphasis on Usage of Acoustic Energy
Microbial biofilms are a major impediment to the use of indwelling medical devices, generating device-related infections with high morbidity and mortality. Major efforts directed towards preventing and eradicating the biofilm problem face difficulties because biofilms protect themselves very effectively by producing a polysaccharide coating, reducing biofilm sensitivity to antimicrobial agents....
متن کاملResearch Paper BIOFILMS AND BIOFOULING: COST AND EFFECT ON DRINKING WATER QUALITY FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
It is microbial cells attached to surfaces in moist environments that form biofilms. Biofouling implies their accumulation on both living and nonliving surfaces. Biofilm-associated cells are known to cost nations billions of US Dollars every year in equipment and machine maintenance, product contamination, medical device-related infections and energy loss; with attendant adverse effects on drin...
متن کاملInhibition of bacterial adhesion on medical devices.
Microbial infections resulting from bacterial adhesion to biomaterial surfaces have been observed on almost all medical devices. Biofilm infections pose a number of clinical challenges due to their resistance to immune defence mechanisms and antimicrobials, and, regardless of the sophistication of the implant, all medical devices are susceptible to microbial colonisation and infection. Research...
